Rival organisers team up for catering showpiece

ORGANISERS of two rival hotel and catering trade exhibitions are ready to join forces to provide Lancashire with a superb showpiece event at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens next year.
Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the venue when the second Lancashire Hotel, Catering and Hospitality Show returns in April. That show is organised by the Bispham-based Consortium of Events and Tourism and already has more than 100 exhibitors lined up for the two-day event.

But now Clifton Quality Meats, organisers of Caterama, a major trade show staged in the resort for the last 25 years, are set to link up with the Consortium to combine the two events on April 6 and 7.

Caterama organiser, Tony Pickavance, explained: “When I took over the running of the Caterama exhibition three years ago, I wanted to look at ways to make it more appealing to the business people of the Fylde coast.

“It became clear that merging both shows would give Blackpool the best catering trade exhibition show in the north of England.

“Our aim is to prove that Blackpool can put on a show that can compete with the bigger cities without losing sight of what the smaller business sector in the North West can provide.”

Consortium director Mike Riches added: “This is great news for the catering and hospitality industry in Lancashire. Clifton Quality Meats and Caterama have been established in the town for a quarter of a century and we’re delighted that they have decided to join forces with us. It can only be good for the show and the industry. “And with so many firms in Lancashire and beyond involved in the hospitality industry, it’s obvious the show will continue to grow.”

Bookings are already up on last year and it is expected there will be more than 180 stands at the show this time.

Mr Riches said: “This has been far beyond our expectations and we anticipate that all stands will be sold out well in advance of the show.”

One of the highlights of the event will be a young student chef of the year competition, held over both days in the Pavilion Theatre. And with bands performing live and a new cookery demonstration area, the event promises to be bigger and better than this year’s inaugural show.

The free-to-enter trade exhibition will cover all aspects of the catering and hospitality industry with exhibitors travelling from all over the country to showcase their products and services.

Stands are available from £750 plus VAT and are being sold on a first-come first-served basis. Anyone interested in more information should visit www.lancashire-show.co.uk, call 01253 808033 or email lancsshow@gmail.com.

Hotel Changes

AN independent hoteliers group has stepped up its efforts to improve accommodation standards in the town by toughening its criteria for membership.

After two years of market research and discussions with its 60 members, the Consortium of Events and Tourism has decided to change its rules and will now only accept accredited hotels.

Hotels wishing to join the group will also have to pass the group’s 10-point fit-for-purpose check, which includes producing up-to-date gas and hard wire test certificates.

The group – which has recently changed its name from the Consortium of Blackpool Independent Hotels – has grown considerably since its launch two years ago and has had 200,000 hits on its website during that time.

When it was set up in 2008, the group promised to be pro-active in tackling problems in the town by reporting failing hotels and those in breach of the rules.

Director Mike Riches said: “We have spent a lot of time in discussions before coming to this decision. But there are still too many hotels out there which are not up to the standards Blackpool should be aiming for.

“We want people who book in our members’ hotels to know that they are of a high standard and meet the relevant safety tests.

“By only accepting accredited hotels for membership, we will be taking another step towards a better Blackpool.” The CET organised the Lancashire Hotel, Catering and Hospitality Show at the Winter Gardens earlier this year and plans are already well under way for an even bigger show next year.

Mr Riches said: “By organising an event like this we’re trying to put on a show that will benefit hoteliers and it proves we are making an effort to do something for Blackpool. And we have several other plans in the pipeline for the future.”

As part of a drive for to attract more hotels, the group is only charging £39.99 for annual membership and takes just seven per cent fees from online bookings. Members also benefit from low-cost website design and printing costs plus access to a password-protected list of recommended suppliers.

Anyone interested in further information about membership should contact the consortium advisers on 01253 808033.
